all things beautiful & mecha

I've come to a realization that many of the articles of clothing i'm super careless about are ones I've lusted over for weeks prior to purchasing them...like that silk paneled Johnathon Saunders pencil skirt I've dumped at a friend's house, my over-sized Comme des Garçons PLAY t-shirt with the giant heart print (this includes the lounge-y cardi with the patch heart--they count as one unit because I like to organize my drawers by designer lol) or my crazy laser-cut/ripped to shreds Marc Jacobs top that I never had the common sense to dry clean so now the holes are big enough to fit over a small dog's head. The clothes I actually care about now are the rather affordable simplistic garments from NastyGal or SHOTWELL or whatever vintage shop I'm obsessed with at the moment (given the fact that i spent somewhere around $60-$150 on any of them, i'm a true bargainista!ewww... I hate any word ending in --ista). I started thinking maybe I take care of these items far more because I have this unnerving feeling they will fall apart any second, is LAEKEN made in china I wonder?

No and NO...it's about the future, not living in the past and embracing nostalgia (or constantly saying "omgggg i was such a baby when i bought this Marc tote, awww remember thaaaaat? it used to be covered in sand and filled with PB&J sannnnnndwichs.....GOD")...it's about meshing together the evolution of our idea of what future really is (every designer has had their interpretation of it in the past 50 years) and enveloping that with an authentic 1940's style that makes the retro-futuristic trend so brilliant and put together. But the view on the future constantly changes, it hasn't been the same since it started. annnnd no, it's not all Open Ceremony or Miu Miu. I'm talking about actually going back in time and looking at all the designers that have influenced fashion of today. Favoritism commence!
From the brilliant minds of Rei Kawakubo, Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto (which began the wonderful birth of Kawakubo's protégé Junya Watanabe's inspiration for futuristic fashion, followed in suit is the young up & comer Jun Takahashi); this collection of 'FUTURE BEAUTY: 30 YEARS OF JAPANESE FASHION' is curated by Akiko Fukai at the BARBICON GALLERY. perfectionnnnn<3

Now as someone who loves knitwear more than her own mother, (so not true, but I did minor in knitwear, just sayinggg) there are some savory techy-knitwear designers that literally just blow my mind... BLOW... MY...MIND. Sandra Backlund, being one of them-- hits the all the key style notes you need in the digital age of knitting. The collection expresses the same insane dis-proportionate volumes of "Dress meets Body, Body meets Dress" back in 1997; and encapsulates the essence of warrior driven vibes in Dolce & Gabbana's metal bodices in FA09. LOOOOOOVE IT. the bubbly silhouette, the bumpy textures; the idea that if you look directly into it, it will suck you into an alternate universe... (okay that last one is partially truthful lol)

I'm soooo going to make some webby knit leggings now<3
Now there are other futuristic inspired designers that are more inclined to find their collection's inspiration in a localized everyday object, for out of this world designer Julia Krantz--it's shells. Wire frames & transparent thin fabric create the illusion of a perfect sea breeze and the shape of shore side beauties.

I want to wear my lantern now <3

And if you're feeling this is too Space Odyssey for you, here's a taste of the bondage trend ;p
